How tarot helped me be a better Brand Designer

Updated: Jul 5, 2022

During the lockdown, since I had a lot of free time, I decided to dedicate myself to learning a practice that had always caught my attention: reading the tarot.

The Tarot is composed of 78 cards divided into 2 categories: Major Arcana and Minor Arcana.

The Major Arcana are based on life lessons and archetypes. Over time I started to learn more and more about the meaning of each of the cards and with this, I could see the similarities that the Tarot has with Branding Design.

Every brand has a personality. Just as a person has specific values, tastes, and characteristics. That's why every time I start a new branding I focus first on the concept and the personality.

Just as in Tarot, in design you can find archetypes that define each brand, for example, the Hero, the Sage, the Explorer, etc. This similarity seemed to me of great value and I decided to develop my method for brand development through the Tarot.

I started applying it to my own project, my brand design program: La Maga | One-week Branding.

I started with a card reading to know the personality of the brand. I was inspired by the cards of The Magician, The Empress, and The Queen of Wands. Based on this the archetype I chose is The Creator.

La Maga is a creative and communication force. It is a charismatic entity that takes action and succeeds in what it sets out to do. Its warm personality allows others to feel safe and understood, thanks to its empathy and ability to listen.

La Maga helps others find themselves and communicate who they are. It likes to be honest and raw. It is a spiritual entity and is interested in constantly evolving. She inspires confidence and power to manifest what is desired.

Having this base made it easier for me to specify the visual elements of La Maga: colors, textures, icons, the type of illustration, tone of voice, etc.

A brand is not only the logo, so through this process, it's possible to create a whole universe full of elements and stories that will help to create a feeling of belonging and that consumers can relate to it in a better way.
